Preliminary Study

Re-Skinning The Tower

Rumors of the Haley Center being demolished have long circulated Auburn University. Motivated by a desire to rehabilitate before starting over, Stacy Norman Architects engaged in a voluntary creative design experiment to re-imagine what the Haley Center tower might be.

This exercise was largely exterior and explored the addition of a double skin façade attached to the existing tower structure for a strong effect. A new stair tower was also added to satisfy modern egress requirements which is one of the greatest issues facing the tower component of Haley. Additionally, lower level masonry was substituted for patterned terracotta panels.

This project was shown to Auburn University as an example of potential - not necessarily a solution. As a result, Stacy Norman Architects was then asked to explore the potential of a reinvented Haley Center (both inside and out) that does not include the tower.
